| Linux is well documented on the Internet as an alternative to Microsoft and other operating systems and this page is not going to bore you with the beginnings and in's and outs etc. of its history to current status. However, it's as well to realise that the Mac OS is based on Unix which is also the basis for Linux, Google Android for mobiles is a derivative of Linux, many governments, government departments such as Police and Military Forces, companies both large and small in the world today have installed or are seriously looking at Linux as an alternative to their current operating systems. Even Toyota, one of the largest car manufacturers, have signed up to Linux for their "in car" systems of the future. There are many flavours of Linux as this is the basis of each Linux companies version. Suse, RedHat and Ubuntu are probable the best known ones. Some are more dedicated to the desktop, others more server oriented. Some of these companies offer paid support, others do not. Basically what you see on the screen is their customisation. Underneath is the Linux operating system common to all. So why change ? Firstly
- it has a lower
cost factor. It will work with older
servers and desktop PC's
as well
as modern multi processor computers.
Secondly
- most of its
software is compatible with,
and interoperable with
existing systems. Very little is required in retraining staff - Most
competent staff will not need any training at all. It is also easier to
maintain, more resilient and less prone to crash.
Thirdly - Support today for hardware is well proven and easy to install. Finally
and very importantly - its
resistance to hack attacks and
viruses.
You will no doubt read that its free ! Yes - its quite true that you can download or buy a magazine with a CD/DVD and install it yourself. The question you have to ask yourself is "Do I have the time or inclination to do this myself ?" - while running a successfull business ? Probable not, so you need to either employ someone or bring in a contractor to take care of the day to day systems. We can give you that knowledge and train an existing person to take on the roll of systems administrator. We can offer secure remote support for faster reaction to any problems. We are
just a call away.
